So, at least one of my blog readers (Hi Mom!) commented that I didn't really give you all a good idea of what my book was about in this post.
Muahahahaha! That means I am doing it right! You are supposed to be curious! You are supposed to be intrigued! What does the venerable Aspiring Author have up his sleeve?
Eh. Who am I kidding? IF/WHEN this thing gets published, it will likely be years from now, so below the jump, I will give you a little more detail...
As I mentioned, my book is an Urban Fantasy. This genre uses a modern day setting layered with fantasy or magical elements. For instance, in Jim Butcher's Dresden Files series, the protagonist is a wizard who lives and works in Chicago, but has to deal with all kinds of nasty things like vampires, werewolves, ghosts and a whole host of other magical beasties. Similarly, Kim Harrison's Hallows series utilizes a female protagonist who is a witch who also has a whole smorgasbord of fantasy monsters to deal with in a fictionalized version of Cincinnati.
My book is based in modern Las Vegas (surprise!), with a few side trips to such exotic locales as Rome and Hayward, Wisconsin. That's right, Mom, a pivotal scene happens right under the giant muskie!
Unfortunately, I cannot share with you the details of my hero. Each story needs to be different to catch the public's eye. I think the unique profession of my protagonist will do that. He does have a form of magic, but it is part of his profession. Part of the conflict in the book is how he uses his powers against someone who wants to bring real honest to goodness magical powers to Earth.
What I can tell you, is that like in these other books, our hero has a whole lot of folks that don't want to see him succeed. However, instead of typical fantasy stalwarts most of my characters are pulled from various religious backgrounds. For instance, there is a demon named Malacoda who was referenced in Dante's Inferno. I also have an ancient Sumerian demon and even an obscure Greek god among others.
Oh, and Charles Darwin.
So there ya go. My book is about demons and magic and Darwin and a giant fiberglass fish in the deep woods of Wisconsin. Seriously. Look it up!
Now, aren't you curious how all those fit together?
Good, that is how Aspiring Author likes it!
