In a previous post, I mentioned that writing the ending is easier than much of the middle is the book. Considering I have written four and a half chapters in the past two weeks (roughly 15,000 words) that is true.
What I didn't realize is how freakin' exhausting it would be! This came as a surprise as I thought I would cruise through the ending because all those story lines were wrapping up and coming together, all I had to do was finish typing.
Then the damn characters got in the way.
You see when you have written nearly 100,000 words and put these guys through all kinds of crap, they begin to get uppity and insist you finish things The Right Way. In other words, some of these characters don't want to go meekly into the night.
One of the "bad guys" wants his say to show you, "hey, I wasn't such a prick as you thought I was". The protagonist on the other hand, wants to know what the flunk is going on. I find him turning around asking me if I know what the hell I am doing.
The funny thing? They are right.
How do I know? I make Loving Wife read the chapters as I finish them. I can tell when she comes to me with her "huh" face that I screwed up. So when I go back to revise, my characters are standing there tapping their foot wondering if I am going to get it right this time.
So, yeah, exhausting. But as I said before, this is a hell of a lot of fun.
